I am not much of a historian but I believe over the course of time the pendulum of good versus evil in over time has swung back and forth. Lately there is so much negativity in the world that we see our culture going down the drain. If we, as Christians united and encouraged one another in shared unity we could move the pendulum closer to where God wants us to be. I believe that our concept(C of C's concept) in years, decades past has been that the "unity" and "encourage one another" meant just us not the global church of Jesus. I am proud of your leadership in our participation in uniting this community and I pray it is contagious. Unity in Jesus brings Hope to a dying world. You are on target!

After Katrina blew down all the fences churches had built over the years, we saw Jesus every day in each other. It made no difference what church you attended we were there to help you. If we didn't have what you needed and we knew one of the other churches had it, we would load you up in our vehicles and take you over there help you get it and carry you home. It is sad that it took Katrina to wake us up. Serving others is what it's all about . One of the lessons Katrina taught me is that it is much EASIER to give then to receive . Instead of finding reasons/problems for not doing something we should be working on solutions to make it happen . One step at a time

For years, the church of Christ has been known (by those who can see past our "Don't play well with others" reputation) as a people with a heart for God's word. I long for a day when we are known as a people with a heart for God's work. We will be a people who practice the NT Christianity that we've emphasized for generations. The NT Christianity message -not just of the book of Acts- but foremost of Christ's repeated message of unity, love, and service. I keep thinking of Patrick's comment the other night...when denominations work together, who will get the credit in the community?... Jesus!

The quick, simple answer for me is working together towards or for some purpose in the Kingdom. For the very reasons you mention, unity does have a lot of baggage for our group - too many think it means "you heretics stop doing what I don't agree with and do it this way or YOU (not me) are prohibiting us working together on something totally unrelated." CO-operating means that there is someone other than myself involved and maybe in charge of this, and if I'm unwilling to give up a little of that, then I am the one who is hindering cooperation or unity.

There is so much to be accomplished...so much more than any of us can even attempt to do alone (in this culture). I fear for those who refuse to join hands to make a wholistic difference. I love my current community more and more simply because we DO all just get along! The community knows that "we pastors" are a team that aims to build bridges and that serves to bring strength and encouragement to our community. What good can be done in a community where sectarianism is (for the most part) done away with? Much good.
